Of course I'm going to sound like a broken record, but that's okay. We have THE BEST CLIENTS! The first time I spoke with Kimberly I absolutely knew she was another dream bride. Kimberly is so creative and has such a defined sense of what her wedding will look like. Can you say details details details? She fell in love with Kelleigh + Adam's wedding and used it as inspiration for her own. Mind you, EVERYTHING about Kimberly + Rob's wedding is distinctly theirs. Her dress? O -MY-Goodness! Heavenly, 1940's flair, birdcage veil, smoking hot shoes...perfection is the only way to describe it.
She and Rob will be married in Tahoe City, CA { a city incredibly close to my heart } on the water, with the most spectacular view of Lake Tahoe! Once again, an incredible ensemble of vendors. Here's where the story gets even more spectacular...we have been hired by Kimberly's sister Kelly as well....AND her best friend Amber! More on those individually spectacular brides in later post.

Where could I possibly start with Christine + Aldo? I feel in love with these two the second I met them. Let me back up, I fell in love with them the first time I spoke with Christine on the phone! Christine + Aldo have begun choosing the most fabulous vendors here in town, making quick, firm decisions. A dream couple! We're talking the best: Penny Sylvia Photography, Carissa Jones to start with. We will be designing and coordinating their urban, metro, ultra chic reception in midtown Sacramento and could not be more excited.

Our initial meeting lasted over 3 hours and had we not exhausted every topic in the book we would have continued on for days. We laughed, laughed and then laughed some more. So incredibly beautiful on the inside that a ray of gorgeousness shines right through.

Honestly, where do I start? It's been quite the week.
It's been quite a blur. You know it's bad when you're not quite sure what day it is right? This is what I remember: Stuck in the snow for 6.5 hours, Jennifer standing in the fresh powder laughing, Kimberly + Rob, San Francisco, Christine + Aldo, Sarah + Clark, Brooke + Jan, airplane, The Parker Palm Springs, TONS of calls to Mexico and a glass of Rombauer Chardonnay. Yep, that sums up my week. Every last minute was incredible. The kind of incredible you feel when you have to pinch yourself because your clients are just too good to be true.
Friday was definitely fabulous. Flew into Palm Springs to meet my incredibly stunning, sweet and gorgeous couple. I could go on about them for days, really, I could. And my brides Mom + Dad, lets just say I have a feeling I may break my rule of "no drinking at my events." I need to have a margarita with Dad, I will find the time. ( Are you listening Sarah? Can I have permission?)

My favorite things encompassed this quick 24 hour trip to the desert. Planning a celebration of love is, of course, an honor. But when you meet a couple that's number one concern is their guests...well, they stole my heart. This wedding is going to be an honor for us to plan and attend. You know it when you see it, the loving glances, the gentle squeeze of the knee, the excitement in Mom and Dad's eyes, and to top it off a groom who's grin spreads ear to ear and says to you, "I am so excited now!" Music to my ears.

After my short flight to Palm Springs I headed to the newly renovated, highly desired Parker Hotel. I was not disappointed. Funky, eclectic, sassy. I felt as if I was in the middle of cheeky Rat Pack movie, as if Dean Martin or Sammy Davis would be basking in the the desert sun the moment I stepped out into the sunshine. Of course I love the aesthetics, but the staff is perfection and most importantly, not scripted.

So back in Sacramento, but I will take with me what "Dad" said, "Look at her! She loves this!" I thought about that statement the entire drive back to the hotel. I DO love "this." The chaos, the running around, the 24 hour trips to different states, the OCD personality in me that comes out when I find the slightest flaw...but at the end of every event I do LOVE "this."

I am one happy planner.

The reason I also share this lovely idea is because these journals would make perfect wedding favors. No secret here that I'm not a huge fan of wedding favors, but these are a huge exception. One of our Cancun couples have ordered these beautiful journals and will be inscribing each and every one of them to their friends and family. Now THAT my friends is a true wedding gift.

{ ASK AWAY } Martha Andrews

For the past few weeks I have been rounding up some of thee best wedding professionals and destination wedding vendors Northern California has to offer. They will be answering some of the many questions we receive. A fresh perspective and different accounting from someone other than us will be, well in my mind, fabulous. We know you will think so too!

Here is your chance to ask those questions that you just quite aren't getting the answers to in the magazines or Internet! Do you sometimes think you don't have the right to ask certain questions, or maybe don't have the gumption that day? If so please, ASK AWAY....

It's no secret that I have an incredible partner in designing heaven with Martha Andrews! I knew the moment I contacted her that she would take time out of her busy schedule to be our first post. We value her opinion, honesty and ridiculous talent more than I can articulate which is why we're presenting her to you today.

What do you believe is the most important aspect when choosing a florist?

When selecting your florist, the most important factor, like any relationship, is trust. It is very easy for a bride to get caught up in a flower she loves and focus all her decor thoughts on that. She should actually keep her thoughts on the big picture. Let your florist know about that flower then, after careful interviewing, trust that her florist will create the look she loves.

I want a specific flower, why can't I have it?

Mother Nature is fickle and the one flower you love just might not cooperate with your wedding date. If you can find a designer that you can trust to capture you and your vision, even though that flower might not be there day of, the look and feel that you get from that flower will!

I want to get the most out of my consultation with my florist. What should I do to prepare?

I tell my brides to come in with pictures, inspiration pieces, i.e. Grandma's broach, a wooden box they found at a tag sale, a piece of glass from Italy, etc....Anything that helps convey what you want to see on your wedding day. All these items help me get a feel for who the bride is and what look she loves. Also be sure to bring a photo of your dress. I always start with the dress. In many ways it is the centerpiece of the wedding and really the starting point of the brides style.

What happens when I don't have a vision in my head, but I know what I like and don't like?

Often my brides will come in and tell me, "I really don't know what I like, or there is SO much that I like," but once we start talking, lay out all of the pictures they have brought, often a vision comes out. They will see they really do have a theme, they just needed some guidance to see it.

Another thing I ask my bride is to give me a sentence or a phrase to convey the theme of their day, i.e. rustic charm, vintage chic, classic modern, down home comfy...catch words that again convey what they like to feel on their wedding day. From there I can begin to create and this is where the trust comes in. A bride needs to meet with a few florists and choose the one that "gets them." Then, as hard as it may be, let it go and trust their designer to bring to life their vision.

Time after time I hear, "that's exactly what I wanted only better!" or "you really got ME!" This is what you want to hear as a designer.

Final Tips:

When picking your venue, keep your total budget in mind. You may find a gorgeous venue, but if it eats up too much of your budget you won't have enough left over to adorn it. If you spend too much on your venue and leave nothing for your decor you are left with a sterile wedding. Nothing says "this is us" more than your big day. It's better to choose a less expensive venue that leaves you plenty of room for decor. It will look so much better, finished, and like your own!

Keep in mind the floral budget should be 10-15% of your total budget. Allow more if you would like to see lighting or draping. Remember it's all in the details. Details speak volumes and really polish your event!

This past wedding season has been, in a word, incredible. I don't mean sort of incredible, I mean downright incredible. So with all the hard work behind us for a couple months, the girls and I are taking a MUCH needed mini-vacation to Lake Tahoe. We will be relaxing, sitting, breathing.....

No doubt we will have files in-hand, Blackberry's at the ready, and laptops charged. Some event planners, present company included, use this time to head to San Francisco, New York or the Mid-West for inspiration. I can honestly say, these ladies give me inspiration every week of every month so there will be no shortage this weekend. I promise to finally get up more wedding gallery's on the website as well!

There are so many reasons I was excited about this wedding! When Sabrina and Cory hired us to plan their Granite Bay Country Club wedding I knew she and I would have a blast with the planning process. She was a fabulous bride!

Over 80% of our weddings this year were outside of Sacramento, so we were really excited to be working with so many wonderful local vendors. Katie Edwards of Ambience Floral Design created Sabrina's perfect centerpieces and bouquets. Katie's staff were fantastic! My favorite stylists Amy Branum of Glow Esthetics and Tiffiny Tredinnick of Mane Attractions had Sabrina looking gorgeous! Brandon and Kami of Sound Image Entertainment did a fabulous job entertaining the eclectic crowd, I absolutely love working with those two! Of course Stephanie Cooley of Stephanie J Designs knocked it out of the park with the gorgeous gorgeous menus, place cards and programs. Steph you are fabulous! Last but not least, Richard Siegel has got to be the most genuine, wonderful person I have met in a LONG time! He and Lee were such a joy to work with and even weighed in on some last minute "round table decisions!"

How about this for some Monday eye candy? Designer, Ryan Hammonds and his sharp, incredible style are beyond drool worthy. I'm not just talking wedding suits ladies and gentlemen. I know for the fact that The Deputy would flip if he had his own custom made suit (*note to self) to wear on date night, special events, etc. Ryan's eye for detail, exceptional quality, gorgeous choice of fabrics from only the best textile mills are reason enough to consider your own custom suit. Add your individual style and voice to the design and you've got a suit tailored perfectly to your lifestyle and personality.

I sound like an ad, I know, but that's how smoking hot these suits are. Throw in our clients with personal experience of R. Douglas and I personally am in designer heaven.

It's no secret that I'm a stalker of all things ETSY. If you have never headed over to their site, it's a MUST see. Tons and tons of incredibly talented artisans with unique ideas and fabulous wares. Have a peek at Small Adventures new product....these felt envelopes are so sweet!

I always stress adding something personal to your event or wedding. This is a fabulous idea right? I think we all have, either in our personal life or with clients, a sense of uniqueness whether we know how to channel it or not! With these I'm thinking a sweet note to your guests tucked away inside. What a genuinely beautiful gesture to add to your wedding reception, or any event for that matter!

Think outside the box , create something that is genuinely you and watch the reaction you get from your friends and family. We all go to dozens of weddings, but which ones stand out? I would be willing to bet it's the events that show the couple put time and effort into reminding you how important you are to them. Forgo the "favors" and take the time to do something personal...Cheers!

Holy hotness...how on earth do I end up with thee most gorgeous couples? Received an email that Karen + Gabe's E session by Tinywater Photography was hot off the press and I couldn't get these up fast enough! A little history about my dynamic pair, Karen contacted me when she was sill living in New York City, preparing to move to Sacramento, and we hit it off immediately. Throw in Gabe and I was in wedding planner heaven! They are so darn fun, full of life and energy that our "appointments" turn into three hour visits! I love it! Gabe is a champ of all grooms, this man is so in love with his fiance...I anticipate magic at their ceremony.

We've put together an amazing ensemble of Sacramento's best vendors, including Tinywater Photography, Carissa Jones, and Martha Andrews to name a few. My team and I are beyond excited for this wedding, it will be phenomenal! Cheers!

{ ALOHA! } Hawaii with Jasmine

Finally putting our feet in the sand after a very long day of vendor appointments!

This week we are on the beautiful garden island of Kaua'i with our sweet bride Jasmine. We decided to take a quick trip over to have a look at her amazing venue, The St. Regis Princeville. We were not disappointed. Previously known as the The Princeville Resort, Starwood Luxury purchased the property a few years ago and the refacing began. It is simply breathtaking.

Destination weddings are always such a joy and honor to produce. When you are lucky enough to be hired by such a lovely couple as Jasmine + Ying are, it simply makes that much better! We laughed, joked, sat in our condo creating her website, and even found time to stop for mai tai's and fruity blended drinks!

When Jasmine + Ying asked me to choose the island, I KNEW Kauai would be the perfect fit for them. They are so incredibly in love, have an enormous sense of family, and their quiet nature and sophistication is perfect for the St. Regis.

Without giving too much away, I will share with you that Jasmine has chosen at team of vendors that are so important to her she decided to bring them to Kauai with her. Martha Andrews, Penny Sylvia and my team will be creating a unique, gorgeous, fun filled week for their families and we cannot wait to come back and share the joy with them all.

I have so many pictures I could post, but I don't want to take away from the beautiful simplicity of the week here with Jasmine. I also wouldn't want to spoil the surprise of this amazing island for the rest of her bridal party and guests!

{ BAT CAKES COUTURE } by Satanica

While I won't tell you which of my clients will be wearing birdcage veils (just in case there's a nosy groom reading!), I will tell you that Satantica's collection Bat Cakes Couture has just be come my new obsession.

Lisa* sent me the link this past week to share the excitement of her ETSY find, and I could not be more grateful! While there are many new designers that have tapped into the bridal hair accessory world, Satantica clearly has the eye for these Victorian inspired wares using high quality fabrics. I've been eye-balling a pale pink comb myself! I think it would be perfect for my and The Deputy's wedding anniversary at the Moss Beach Distillery, no?

I believe it is so important to add an element of your personality to your wedding trousseau. I get asked all the time if "this or that" is appropriate and my answer is always the same. "Do what you feel is right and represents you." I am so in love with artists such as Bat Cakes Couture, Ban-Do and Twigs & Honey because these are clearly designers who embrace the concept of femininity, gorgeousness and individuality. { MOOSEY + CHACHI }

Today's post is for all of you dog lovers that treat their pets like family...you know who you are! I'm not talking fashion, design or even weddings today. For the past two days I've been taking a step back and working from home (aka the beautiful backyard The Deputy designed and built for me.) Every once in a while heading into the studio just doesn't seem appealing. So meet Moose + Chachi! My "office-mates" for the past few days! Isn't it amazing how our four-legged friends have the ability to make us smile?

Some of you know my "previous life" as I like to call it was in law enforcement. I have NEVER liked small dogs. I've been a lab and shepherd kind of girl since I can remember. Chachi, my chihuahua is a product of that previous life I mentioned. While on an assignment this little 1.7lb, nearly hairless, covered in fleas with ribs protruding from his side little BEAST tried to attack me when I entered his, not-so-law-abiding ,owners home. I gave his previous owners a few "options" with regards to animal cruelty.....they opted to give me "Charlie" as they called him in lieu of jail time....I don't think rescue dogs ever forget that you saved them....

Moose or "dumb-dumb" as The Deputy lovingly calls him is our 115lb+ labrador we got from a local law enforcement colleague. As soon as we saw him we realized why he was the LAST one to be chosen from the litter! Feet the size of saucers, but the most beautiful green eyes we had ever seen! So several pairs of chewed up shoes later, a little adjustment time with Chachi (who's completely in charge of the duo) and we have our dynamic pair.

My friend Penny was over visiting one day, and for those of you that know her, she can't resist photos of dogs! And we're so glad she did! Hope my little/big guys gave you a smile....thanks Penny!

I keep getting asked "what's with the lack of blogging lately Alison!?!" I know, I know....i've been horrible lately! Here's one of the reasons: working on the details! One thing we pride ourselves on is the details for each individual couple. That my friends takes time. I will always say how "it's all in the details," but when I say this I mean individual details for individual couples.

This year I have brides + grooms with such an amazing plethera of hobbies, talents, careers and love stories. So alot of our time is allocated towards finding the details that fit within their personalities, and it's so much fun I tell you!

Here's what I found to day for Sean + Monica! They will be getting married at a gorgeous 1940's beach house past Bodega Bay. I've used surf boards in the past, and today stumbled upon The Back Porch Shop who make so many great items! Perfect for their beach house wedding! { DIY PROJECT } Gorgeous Pearls

I could NOT resist passing this along to you all. Simply Gorgeous! DIRECTLY from Style Me Pretty.

Materials:
Everything I used for the necklace I got at Michael’s store. They have a great bead selection (certain stores more options than others- but I think you can also order online). I also got clasps that had multiple hooks or loops so that I would have more than one strand of beads coming from the one clasp. (I am not sure what those are referred to as). I found them on sale so the brand is not listed on Michael’s site, however, there are others that will substitute nicely. There are also plenty of bead shops and craft shops that I am sure would have great selections.

You can find the clear jewelry string (nylon- not stretchy) at Michaels, or fishing line from any local Target or Walmart store will suffice as well.

Instructions:
My basic philosophy in going into the necklace was that I wanted it to be eclectic and sweet- so, I stuck with jewels that matched my color scheme but still added a bit of spark every now and again. Since each strand connected to a different hook, I basically just started with one layer, and as I added more, made them slightly longer or slightly shorter to layer them one right on top of the other- After each layer I was sure to hold it up to my neck to make sure they were falling properly. If you want the necklace a bit fuller- you can add more than one strand of beads to each individual hook.

The great part about an eclectic necklace is that your strands don’t have to have even numbers and matching patterns. Each strand was unique to itself- however, it is good to continually try on the necklace and have an outside opinion to make sure it is flowing smoothly and looking good on your particular neckline. I also used this necklace as a “reception necklace”- so, I felt ok about making it a little more “fun” rather than “formal”.

I added a small chain to the back so that I could adjust the length of the necklace if desired.

I used pretty basic “necklace crafting technique” and just put in a little more time and patience to create the layers.

A helpful hint: When you tie knots at the ends when you are attaching the strands from one latch to another- after tying several knots to secure the beading- Cut off the excess clear string and use a lighter to burn the very tip of the string so that it shrivels up and creates a small lump of melted plastic. This helps to secure the knot from slipping loose as well as from creating an itchy point. Don’t get the fire too close (you only need to hold it near -not directly on)- or it will burn more than desired and snap some of the base knots as well.

It has been such a whirlwind of weddings, bookings, family, friends......with wedding season in full swing, The Deputy on a new shift, The Teens out of school....it's been a "Calgon-take-me-away" kind of month! In the most beautiful way of course.....

All four of my fabulous Event Producers are off and running! Jennifer and Christina are off to Las Vegas for a joint effort of work and no doubt a bit of debauchery when they finish! Andrea is off to Indianapolis. Brennda to the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas to be exact, to meet some fabulous new vendors and no doubt a bit of scuba diving! Yes, part of this posting is to announce that every one of my event producers are now coordinating and producing their own events! I am so proud and blessed to have such an amazing group of women, all equally enthusiastic about their clients and the creative process.

This week for me has indeed been a phenomenal one. I am so excited about ALL of our new clients! Each have amazing visions, fun and loving personalities respectively and most importantly such beautiful love stories! There are no words to express that amazing feeling of watching my clients light up the room when we start the planning process.

So speaking for myself, Jennifer, Brennda, Christina and Andrea..... THANK YOU a million times over for allowing us to be a part of your wedding!

{ GETTING MARRIED } Rebecca + Ryan

I know I say this a lot about my clients (because I am blessed with this "job!"), but I absolutely LOVE this couple! Rebecca + Ryan live in beautiful San Diego and will be tying the knot at a lovely local winery. Ryan is hilarious, being so gracious as he is convinced it was "his idea" when we make decisions! Rebecca's parents are so sweet, gracious and kind to me I can barely stand it! Just a few weeks ago when my lovely couple flew in for another meeting, Rebecca's father perched us up top his beautiful property overlooking his vineyards! We sat, ate, chatted.....just beautiful. Rebecca, just pure beauty and kindness. She is the dream bride we all pray for.

Here are a few details. This celebration has so many team members ensuring a perfect day. I am beyond excited to meet Annie of Studio Z Photography! We've chatted a few times now and I can't wait to meet her. She will also be flying in to shoot the beautiful rehearsal dinner we've planned. Thank so much for these gorgeous e-session photos Annie!

One of the the first vendors Rebecca + Ryan hired was the amazing Martha Andrews. Need I say more? Think vibrant blues, lush yet soft greens, crystals and hanging chandeliers from every tree in the courtyard. Martha's work speaks for itself! Stephanie Cooley, proprietress of Stephanie J Designs has once again created the most gorgeous invitations, place cards, etc. Simply beautiful as always.

Rebecca + Ryan will also be treating their guests to a beautiful dinner created by Kim Scott of Mama Kim Cooks. Everything they've chosen will stun their friends and family. Though no detail has been left out, from the quartet to the cocktail lounge, to the live music, Rebecca + Ryan, have never lost sight of this incredible meaning of this gorgeous occasion. This wedding is going to be a pure celebration of their love and commitment to spend the rest of their lives together. Jennifer, Brennda and I are so excited to have been a part of your wedding process, and "the best is yet to come."

{ DESTINATION I DO }

At 6am sharp Brennda and I will be off on a jet plane to the beautiful island of Kauai. I will do my best to post while there! As I finish up last minute details, check and triple check the itinerary and timeline, I started thinking about my negligence in posting about destination weddings!

So here's a few tips I always like to share. I think I will focus on the "last minute" details such as the few I will be dealing with today:

Hopefully you've been fortunate enough to interview your vendors ahead of time, whether via telephone, Skype or in person and should be feeling confident about the team you've choosen. Constant correspondence with your vendors is key. During the last weeks leading up to your wedding, be sure to get your itinerary and vendor contact list together. I ALWAYS put together a list of the vendors we will be using and distribute that list to each and every vendor. Your caterer, florists, lighting company and officiant will greatly appreciate it, trust me! The last thing your vendors want to do is chase you around during your wedding or reception to ask questions.

Customize your itinerary with your photographer. He/She will have their own schedule they will be following. You are guaranteed a much more cohesive day if everyone is on "the same page."

If you don't have an event planner or coordinator, ask your band or DJ to keep things moving on schedule. These are one of the FIRST people who should receive your itinerary. Your musical group will be instrumental in keeping the reception flowing in a timely manner. They will cue you for your first dance, cake cutting, etc.

Schedule your appointment to apply for your marriage license before you leave. Each state and country has specific policies and procedures. Be sure to look into it as soon as you decide to have a destination wedding!

With airlines changing their policies regarding baggage on what seems a weekly basis, it would benefit you to look into luggage costs. If you will be taking over several items that you didn't want to chance shipping, make sure you're at your 50lb per bag and are prepared to pay extra if you go over the weight maximum.

Delegate someone to get your rentals (i.e linens) returned should they need to be shipped and ask that this person square up any details the next day.

I suppose the point is make yourself a list and check it twice....or five times! A little organization and a lot of due diligence will ensure a smooth wedding and enable you to love every moment. Remember, you're getting married! Keep in perspective what the big picture is and enjoy each and every moment. You won't be getting that moment back, so go with the flow, trust the team of vendors you've hired and be loved. Happy Planning!

After months of poking and prodding, I've convinced my amazing Event Producer Brennda Corrie to start a diving blog! Brennda has been diving since she was 16 years old and has traveled the world! We're talking Turks & Caicos, Coco's Island, Guadalupe Island, U.S. Virgin Islands, & of course the Hawaiian Islands just to name a few.

So not only is she such a phenomenal and gracious Event Producer, she spends her spare time certifying students! Brennda is a PADI Dive Instructor with over 10 years experience teaching, she's just downright amazing. When my husband begged borrowed and pleaded for me to get certified, I caved! I use to be deathly afraid of the big blue, ok sort of still am, but every time I get in the water I thank my husband and Brennda for talking me into it! She was so patient and so understanding of my fears and anxiety, now I have the honor of helping HER with classes!

I know many of you plan on hitting beach locations for your honeymoon. Consider getting Open Water Certified! I promise you will never look at the world we live in the same again!

Penny Sylvia Photography, I'm smitten! This woman is ridiculously talented and every time I sneak on over to her blog I fall deeper in love with her work! I am so insanely excited to be working with her this summer and on an upcoming project that my smile is a mile wide, seriously it is =)

While I'm on the subject of photography, I will throw a few tips out there. Research your photographer as you would any other vendor. You wouldn't hire a caterer if you only "kind of" liked their food but like their prices right? Sometimes it takes a while to find that fit. But I promise you, it's so worth the time and effort finding the perfect photographer!

Your photographs are the one tangible thing you will have after your wedding. The flowers will be wilted & gone, the linens returned....but the photos capturing your day will be what sits on your coffee table, gracing your first Christmas Cards, etc. Spend the time, do the research, discover the style that you like...I promise it's well worth it!

Reputable photographers book out well past a year, so book them and book them fast if you find that perfect fit! Happy Planning....

{ Plan Ahead } Postage Hike!

Come May 11th, the US Postal Service will be increasing their postage. Why do I bring this up? Because you really need to keep this in mind with your reply cards. As is proper etiquette, having a self addressed envelope for your guests to reply to your invite is customary. If your "please reply by:" date is past May 11th, well, you get the idea.....

My suggestion and the safest bet is to buy the Forever Stamp (above). Why chance it? And while we're on the subject of postage, some of you may forget when ordering your stationary to keep in mind you may be paying a higher postage fee. Check with the USPS website and look up your envelope size and weight in ounces. This is one of those unexpected expenses if you don't plan ahead!

The New Wedding Reception

So some of these ideas from A White Box blog are clearly not for everyone....but for those of you that want a little pizzazz to your reception here are some fun ideas! Some of these are fun and funky ideas are great for those smaller more intimate weddings....FUN FUN FUN!

The New Wedding Reception: 29 "Inside-the-Box" ideas for brides

Video Games. Bring in flat screen TVs and several Wii gaming systems. As an added detail and fun surprise: make a "Mii" for each one of your guests before the wedding. (Note: You can have up to 100 Miis per system).

Cooking Demonstration. Find a chef or caterer that will provide a cooking demonstration in front of your guests as they observe how their meal is prepared. When the show is finished, servers would bring out the plated meals prepared just as the chef had demonstrated.

Awards Show. Host an awards presentation with prizes for "best dressed," "best dancer," etc. Each member of the wedding party could present an award that relates to them.

Guided Tour. Provide a tour of your reception venue with a fun and interesting guide. This would be particularly fun if your venue has special meaning to you or your story as a couple.

Band/Orchestra Performance. This idea is hardly new, but consider hiring a large swing band or orchestra for your reception. This will be entertaining to guests who don't enjoy dancing.

Theatre. Put on a skit, or hire a theatre group to perform a short play for your guests.

Contests. Wedding-cake-eating contest, anyone?

Professional Dance Performance. Again, this idea isn't new, but you can hire professional dancers of any type to perform for your guests. (My cousin had one of her friends perform a fire-dance at her reception!)

Professional Dance Instruction. Hire dancers to teach your guests how to ballroom or swing dance.

Street Entertainers. Ventriloquists, acrobats, magicians, stilt-walkers, themed character actors, unicyclists, mimes, living statues... you get the idea. You might consider clowns, balloon artists, or face-painters to entertain children.

Raffles. Guests can earn raffle tickets in different ways, or perhaps they can outright purchase them to win prizes related to the couple or the event theme.

Silent Auction. No... too tacky.

Drive-In. Superfun idea for an "inside-the-box" ceremony. Consider having snacks served by waiters on rollerskates.

Design Showcase. Guests could "sponsor" a table to design and allow the couple's style to inspire their theme. Each table would be completely different. Perhaps designers could come in the morning to set up their table design. Guests could walk around and vote on the top designs. As an added detail, it would be fun to coordinate this and include the wedding gift as part of the design somehow.

Marching Band/Color Guard. Fun idea for an outdoor ceremony or reception.

Sing-Along. Some of these ideas really require the "right" group of guests. This is one of them. The songs could be fun and kitchy or traditional cultural favorites.

Game Show. Some DJs will create hokey versions of game shows, but for the quiz show couple, this could be done well with the right investment.

"Real Life" Theatre. Hire actors to be fake guests or servers at your wedding to entertain your [real] guests, a la "The Real Wedding Crashers" without the "crasher" part.

Stand-Up Comedy. Hire a comedian to entertain guests for any portion of your evening.

Opera. A true opera singer would, for the right group, be fantastic.

Picnic. For a more casual outdoor reception, provide every couple or family with a blanket and a basket filled with food. Guests would set up their own picnics and enjoy a lovely afternoon together. The baskets and blankets could be kept as "favors."

Casino Night. Bring in craps and blackjack, even a roulette wheel, and hire some dealers to host your own casino reception. Provide chips to your guests and let them redeem them for prizes or drinks.

Board Games. Set up tables of four at your reception and arrange each board game in the middle. Save money on centerpieces AND provide entertainment for your guests.

Charades. Use the category "Guests at this wedding."

Magicians/Illusionists. These would serve your guests particularly well during your cocktail hour.

Petting Zoo. Animal lovers can bring in a travelling petting zoo to enertain children.

Arcade. Set up an area filled with old-school arcade games like Pacman and Pinball. Load them up with quarters so guests can play all night.

Scavenger Hunt. Arrange for a scavenger hunt during your cocktail hour. This could encourage guests to explore a really fabulous reception venue that might otherwise go unappreciated.

So it's not secret that I'm a HUGE fan of Rachelle Photography, in fact I stalk the girl and her amazing images. I positively cannot wait to work with her again! Rachelle will be doing the Alison Ulshoffer Events team photo shoot, and I am beside myself excited. Now if we can just get the rain to stop!

{ Dr. Tom Hopkins } Spring Fling

Earlier in the year, Dr. Tom Hopkins of KCRA 3 asked me to design and plan his 1st Annual Spring Fling. All proceeds of his invite only party will be going to the American Juvenile Diabetes Association, a foundation close to my heart.

We will be holding his event on the Roof Top Terrace above the Sacramento Grand Ballroom which has sweeping views of the downtown cityscape. Dr. Hopkins is going all out with gorgeous fabrics, phenomenal food and beverage, and "a-list" service for his guests. He's infusing his personality into every element of his event. From the private organza draped lounge cabanas, to the butler style hosting, this event is going to be absolutely stunning!

Getting Married : Kelleigh + Adam 7.11.09

So this adorable voice is on the other line when I answer the phone. The kind of voice that you know is just a simply sweet person (you know it when you hear it).....So Ms. Kelleigh asks me if I'm available for her July 11th wedding in Lake Tahoe. I regretably tell her I'm not. Then I start thinking, "Well, I could send Andrea if that is an option for you." She quickly responds that it is.

Kelleigh and her equally beautiful mom come in a week later to meet Andrea and myself. Andrea and I both instantly fall in love with them! Kelleigh and Adam's wedding is going to be full of personal touches, a beautiful family and a day that will be forever embraced by her family and friends. The amazing Penny Sylvia of Penny Sylvia Photography will without a doubt capture the beauty that is this gorgeous couple.

Congratulations Kelleigh + Adam! We're so blessed to be a part of your big day!

Your Best Face Forward

So for the past several weeks, my naturally gorgeous bride Christina has been completely (rightfully so) stressed about the make up for her March wedding. She saw a total of 3 "make-up" artists. Needless to say, none gave her the look she had been dreaming of in her mind. Thankfully, the always amazing Amy Branum of Glow Esthetics came to Christina's rescue and gave her the exact look she was going for!

I bring this up because I want all you brides to keep this in mind: When you meet a make up artist, make sure you are speaking the same language. Your "cat-eye" may not be the same as your stylist. Your "smoky" might mean a deep shade of grey as opposed to a deep shade of charcoal. The best way to prevent miscommunication is to take pictures with you to your consultation. And always keep in mind, we all have different shapes, colors and qualities that may not work well with the style you've choosen.

If you find a stylist, be it hair or make-up, simply look for their techniques. If you believe it's just a miscommunication in style, that can be rectified. Most importantly, make sure you have great rapport with him/her....that is equally as important! Happy Planning!

Andrea and I both were absolutely thrilled to meet such a talented, talented lady! Each piece was so different from the next, full of texture, color, and unique style.

Vintage-inspired images are a favorite, particularly of birds and animals, and almost all of her tags will have a shabby, aged, cottage feel.
